This Is No Fluke!!!

So, in case you haven’t been paying attention, Sandra Fluke is a law student at Georgetown University who cares about women’s issues and reproductive rights.  Miss Fluke testified in front of Congress on the matter of the exemption that religious organizations are seeking to be amended to the Healthcare Bill allowing their insurance companies to deny access to contraceptives based on religious principles.  Fluke told Congress about a friend of hers who needs the pill as medication for her ovarian cysts.

Apparently Republicans have a tough time listening/reading because they claim that Fluke went before Congress to ask for taxpayers to pay for her contraception because she was having so much sex that she was going broke paying for prophylactics.  Rush Limbaugh called her a slut and suggested that she should have to post videos of her sexual activity since she’s asking the taxpayers to subsidize it.

I can’t say that Rush’s behavior was much of a surprise.  This is the Republican War on Women that we have been seeing since Roe.  And facts be damned, they’d rather go on slut-shaming any woman who disagrees with them, then having a real debate on the issue.  The good news, is that so many people have complained to Rush’s advertisers, that 6 of them have decided to part ways with his show.  As the Carbonite CEO put it best:

No one with daughters the age of Sandra Fluke, and I have two, could possibly abide the insult and abuse heaped upon this courageous and well-intentioned young lady. Mr. Limbaugh, with his highly personal attacks on Miss Fluke, overstepped any reasonable bounds of decency. Even though Mr. Limbaugh has now issued an apology, we have nonetheless decided to withdraw our advertising from his show. We hope that our action, along with the other advertisers who have already withdrawn their ads, will ultimately contribute to a more civilized public discourse.

And in a deft political move, President Obama showed his support of Fluke, taking the side of angels, and doing so without having to lower himself to dealing with Limbaugh directly.  Limbaugh has (sort-of) apologized, but he’s still an asshole.  —Uncle Eb/John

Hit, Bounce, Hit!!!

I stumbled across this wonderfully nostalgic video the other day.  While dated, and low-budget, the points made are surprisingly still relevant today.  The brain has an unfortunate tendency to clutter things up with distractions during performance.  It’s true for music as well as sports.  If a person can minimize the amount of over-thinking (lower the volume on the critical voice in the head) it’s amazing how much better they can perform.  This book came out in the early 70’s and achieved great popularity to the Eastern/New-Agey approach.  But it turned out to become a pretty good harbinger of modern sports psychology.  Many of the claims he makes are now conventional wisdom, and athletes and musicians in all fields use these meditative practices to be better on the stage/court.  Of course, like with meditation, putting it into practice can be frustratingly difficult.  —Uncle Eb/John
